Renewal
Congratulations! Your design has been registered. What now?
The registration automatically lasts for three years. If the proprietor wishes to extend the life of the registration beyond that, a fee for every year thereafter that the renewal is desired must be paid. Put differently, you must pay annual renewal fees to maintain the registration after the initial three-year period.
If the renewal fee is not paid the registration lapses. It can be restored in certain circumstances.
Unlike a trade mark registration, you do not have to use or exploit the design to maintain the registration.
Read section 22 of the Designs Act.
